Stitched- and bound-resist in checkered pattern

Technique: Boushi – Capped motif binding thread resist

Pattern: Ichimatsu – Checkerboard pattern, named after 18th-century kabuki actor Sanokawa Ichimatsu, who frequently wore the pattern, which had been used centuries and gone by different names, such as genroku mon’you. It appears in multiple applications of Japanese design, including architecture, landscaping, pottery, weaving, and lacquerware.
