Technique: Makiage Shibori – Stitching and crisscross binding in the shape of a motif

Pattern: Segmented Asa-no-Ha – Pattern derived from regular hexagons and named for its likeness to hemp leaves. The pattern has been used since ancient times in Japan. It symbolizes growth and strength since hemp is durable and grows quickly. This geometric design appears not only in textile design but also in wood cuts and architecture. Process illustrations are from the book Shibori: The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing by Wada, Rice, and Barton. (c)1983
